Norcoclaurine HCl, more popularly known as higenamine is truly the extra beast in Jack3d Micro. This is what provides the crazy, laser-like focus that leaves you NOT wanting to leave the gym, and brings a heat-inducing, thermogenic weight-loss component as well! Essentially, higenamine is a naturally occurring chemical compound found in a number of plants, and it is safe and well-tolerated in the relatively low dosages that are in Jack3d Micro.
When DMAA (1,3 Dimethylamylamine HCl) was getting the original Jack3d to be banned by countries such as Canada and Australia, USPLabs set out to find something with similar effects that was also safe, natural, and new to the nutrition industry.
What they found was Norcoclaurine, and it brings a LOT of incredible things to the table – and it’s been safely used for thousands of years in traditional medicine.
If you’ve tried Jack3d Micro, surely you’ve noticed something “extra” going on – beyond caffeine. Something making you that much more energetic, and a bit hotter and sweatier during intense workouts. It’s the higenamine, and it’s got a ton of benefits.
So let’s talk about why.
WARNING: Things are about to get really scientific. We’ll do our best to put it in layman’s terms and link you to the best studies.
Higenamine: The Incredible, Unknown Weight Loss Agent

Science has proven that Higenamine is an effective beta-1 and beta-2 adrenergic agonist[2,3]. This means that it will boost your heart rate (thanks to beta-1) and then burn bodyfat by inducing lipolysis. In that process, triglycerides will get released from fatty cells — and combined with a workout, you can then use them for ENERGY rather than keeping them around.
So that makes higenamine an efficient fat burning compound – something we’re all interested in. But more importantly, you can consider it an energy compound because of the release of those triglycerides. Combined with the increased “turnover” (everything moves faster) you get from caffeine, and the long lastic effects of the caffeic acid, and you have an incredible combo one-two-three stimulation mix to have energetic and long-lasting workouts.
Opening Up Your LungsBut higenamine wasn’t always used for fat-burning purposes. In fact, it happens to be extremely helpful to your lungs, especially if you have related conditions (speak to a doctor).
Recently, it has been confirmed that higemanine does posses physiological qualities that could induce the relaxation of the trachea. However, it has been reported that these effects of higenamine are dose-dependent and are especially efficient in reducing tracheal-complications that are caused by acetycholine. Additionally, in another study, higenamine has shown to have anti-histamine properties that people with various medical conditions have used in the past.
Norcoclaurine / Higenamine and its Great Effects on the Heart
Higenmanine has also been shown to promote better vascular relaxation and vasodilation, it has been found to promote better erection in men via beta-adergenic interactions.
This is great, because many stimulants do the opposite. Not in this case – higenamine actually helps with the nitric oxide boosters in Jack3d Micro (agmatine sulfate, arginine nitrate, and L-Citrulline).
This is out of the scope of our usage, but this is a great heart activity inducer. Doctors can even use higenamine to prevent and treat bradyarrhythmias (too slow of a beat). Note that the doses they need to use are far higher than anything we’ll see with Jack3d Micro – it is extremely well tolerated in the case of Jack3d Micro – but still, follow the dosage instructions and stick to them!
How Long Does this Last?
Here’s the good news, although it sounds bad at first. Higenamine has a relatively short half-life of 22 minutes. However, this is a GOOD thing. First, note that half-life is not the same thing as clearance! It’s going to stay in your system far longer – it will just be at a weaker level after your workout.
Users feel it for well over an hour, but not forever. Some of us DO want to get to sleep and stop sweating at some point! That’s why this is good.
That same study showed that the oral bioavailability of higenamine in rabbits was between 2.8% and 5.5%. Of course, we aren’t rabbits, but you don’t get a ton of this into your system – and it still works phenomenally well.
Norcoline vs. the CompetitionSo we know that higenamine has beta-2 adrenoreceptor activity. How well does it stack up?
When combining studies, it is actually just a touch weaker than synephrine in a “pound for pound”, or “mg for mg” strict basis comparison. This is just beta-2 activity and has nothing to do with lipolysis. But because it works so well on bronchoconstriction, we suspect that this is FAR better.
And the fact that it takes a bit longer to get going, but then hits hard, is an excellent thing in a pre workout supplement as well.
Any Higenamine Side Effects?
Much of it comes from rat studies and conversions need to be done, so we still need more data. Needless to say, it’s extremely well tolerated. It’s been in the food supplies and traditional medicine for centuries with no problem. But we can get more detail than that:
Mice were HEAVILY loaded with it, and there were no fatalities. An equivalent dosage FAR beyond what’s in Jack3d Micro would have to be taken to affect you. In fact, roughly 160mg/kg, or over 12g for a standard person, had no negative effect on mice.
So any side effects of Jack3d Micro are going to be limited to the side effects from caffeine, and you should know your caffeine tolerance. Additionally, because of this novel stimulant, USPlabs didn’t have to put that much caffeine in there in the first place!
Fact is, this is a far safer stimulant, and all science points to higenamine being an excellent add-on to Jack3d Micro.
So while there have been no actual experiments conducted on human subjects, the use of higenamine as a nutritional supplement has been generally regarded to be safe. The data at hand appropriates 47.5mg as the daily average higenamine consumption of most people in many Eastern cultures where the compound has been traditionally used.
Experts added that the levels of higenamine supplementation should be comparable to its intake via food consumption. Note that this is still a very conservative estimate since a vast majority of the eastern world have been speculated to have been using higenamine in greater amounts over the centuries. However, as of the present, 47.5mg is the recommended daily supplementation dosage of higenamine.
Some Prescription Drug Users (Blood Thinners) – Beware!
However, for those who are taking blood thinners or anti-platelet medications, it would be particularly wise to consult with a medical professional before starting on any higemanine or higenamine-containing supplement.
A 1997 higenamine related research showed the compound to have subtle anti-coagulant properties. With this said, those who are not under these medications and those without any respective health conditions should not be worried about higenamine’s subtle anti-coagulant effect.
Also, higenamine has been part of traditional Chinese and Japanese culture for many centuries, and during which, it has never brought any significant safety issue. A number of animal research also validates the both the safety and efficacy of higenamine as a nutritional supplement.
Despite all of these, however, human research still remains to be ideal. We’ll keep you updated as we get more and more.
Where is Higenamine / Norcoline From?
DMAA was originally derived from geranium flower stems, which sometimes caused controversy because not many forms had it. But the most potent higenamine plant sources include various Aconitum flowers (Carmichaeli, Japonicum, Napellus), Asarumheterotropoide, Gnetumparvifolium, Anonasquamosa and, among others, Nelumbonucifera. Many different incredible places where you can get it!
The History of Norcoclaurine HCl
As for its history, it was first used in traditional Japanese cooking. Traditional chefs have found some of these plants as ideal ingredients in the making of confectionery creations such as cakes.
Also, in certain traditional Chinese cultures, a number of these plants have been used in the prevention and treatment of a number of medical conditions. It was the practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine that have first discovered the incredible effects of the higenamine plant source Nelumbonucifera. Higemanime was also traditionally used to treat a number of breathing complications such coughing and other more complex medical conditions you can imagine.
